The outcomes of a collaboration between the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi, Thailand are exhibited at “FurnitureORIGINS 2016”. Students from the two institutions conceptualised and produced furniture designs that were realised into prototypes. This exhibition showcases the creative processes and outcomes of the 2016 collection, “New Scenery of Daybed”, as well as a retrospective of two previous collections.
A total of 15 student participants were involved in this project. From NAFA were seven 3D Design programme students reading Furniture & Spatial Design as well as Object & Jewellery Design; who worked with eight KMUTT students majoring in Industrial Design and Interior Design, from the School of Architecture & Design.
The project kicked off in Thailand with a 5-day workshop in October 2015. Despite being in different countries, students kept up the discussion online, and finally realised their designs with the fabrication of 1:1 scale prototypes in Thailand. All students made visits to the showrooms and factories of Hawaii Thai and Deesawat, to gain first-hand experience with the production processes and materials used.
Focused on developing skills in design professionalism and entrepreneurship, students gained knowledge of the prototyping and design development stages in a real-world setting, within an interdisciplinary design environment. Working with the Thai manufacturers helped students develop ideas that can be offered in the marketplace.
